Does it really matter if ?

Posted by Jeff Blanket

You have the latest model golf clubs in your bag? I have a set of old Wilson Pro Staff irons a Vucan 4 wood hybrid “I bought that at a thrift store” an Alien sand wedge “also thrift store” an Odyssey putter “givin by a friend” a Warrior driver which is awesome! “also from a friend and a .97 cent Dunlop pitching wedge “garage sale” and I shoot in the low to mid eighties.

well done. a man after my own heart. using set honma irons . they were in bag along with powerbuilt woods , callaway one, teo iron , vintage clubs . great wilson putter . offered 5 dollars for the bag. wanted it for storage. got everything . who cares as long as it works .

I have some clubs where the shaft is bent about 1/4 up the shaft from the head, 9, 3, 4, and 6 irons. This was caused by a suitcase placed on top of the golf bag in a car trunk. These are steel, regular flex.

If you were to roll the clubs on a flat table, you'd see a bigger gap between the shaft and table based on the curve of the bend in the shaft. A straight shaft would be the same gap for a full rotation.

The biggest gap difference is about 1 millimeter, measured by placing playing cards into the gap between the table and the shaft, with the bend facing down and the bend facing up. I can visually see the shaft is bent without the cards, but it takes close inspection to see.

I'm a fairly new player learning how to swing and was wondering if this should matter that much.

1. Are bent shafts inevitable?
2. Is there some degree of bend allowed in a shaft to where it's still considered 'straight'?
3. Is this going to affect my learning or will it only matter for scratch golfer?

Xerox,

The answer above me is spam, don't listen to that nonsense about spine aligning your clubs, that's snake-oil.

He is correct about one thing though, bent clubs will not produce consistent results. I think they would be safe to play with since the bending is very slight, however I know speaking for me, I would always wonder if that push to the right was because my club was bent or because the swing was bad.

The bending of the shaft will effect the ball flight because of changes to the loft, lie, and face angle….a golf club is actually a precision instrument, if everything is good….the results can be really good. If some thing are bad, say the loft and lie…..then you could make a great swing and end up with a less than great result.

To answer your three questions:

1) Steel shafts should never be bent.
2) There is some degree of flex that is associated with the weight of the club head. Never having seen your clubs I'm assuming that the bend you're referring to is something outside of that because you're talking about specific clubs in the set.
3) It could effect your learning.

My recommendation would be to have the bent clubs reshafted and have them all inspected by a professional clubfitter or PGA certified repair shop (all Golf Galaxy's have repair shops, and so do many Dick's Sporting Goods) This shouldn't cost you much money…possibly $15 to 20 bucks a club max.

Good Luck!

What Do you think/Suggestions

im also looking for where to apply. my gpa is close to yours. im looking all over the us. from those top notch dream schools to the state schools which i will rely on. first think about location. search for schools with academic programs that you are related to a career that you would like to pursue. once youve found some that interest you, email an admissions counselor and request more information. visit schools as well. also talk to your school counselor and see what they say. maybe even chat with a teacher that knows you well and one that you trust, who could help you with your decision. keep your parents involved too! good luck! =]

I've been to the driving range once. I found an inexpensive set of really cute 'hope' clubs. I like them because they benefit cancer (plus they're pink!) they're about $200 for the whole set plus bag, so I can't imagine them to be great clubs…but does it really matter at this level?

Any suggestions to purchasing a decent set (I don't have much money to spend on it though) to learn on would be much appreciative!
thanks!

There are different theories to buying clubs, you can either buy really cheap clubs, most of which are inconsistent throughout the bag (your 5iron might go just as long as your 8iron). But just to learn it wont be a problem. If you decide that you are really into golf, you will probably get another set when you get "better". So it really comes down to how serious you are about playing. If you think this is a long term deal, you should just buy the expensive set and you can get used to them and not have to change feelwise. On top of that you will not have to waste that extra $200 dollars on the "beginner" set. But if money isnt an issue and you still arent sure about the game, you should go with the $200 set and if you like it upgrade later in your career

Looking at buying a 2002 Audi S3. Assuming a full set of clubs including driver in a stand bag. Or do I need to fold down the seats?

Yes they will if you take your driver and your woods out, you will get two sets in if you do that. As long as they are not big tour bags.

What clubs does A novice golfer buy?

Posted by Jeff Blanket

Hi, I am a high school student who needs a little golf help. I am joining my schools golf team and I do not know what clubs or what to buy in general. I have some dunlop rebel Graphite from 8th grade but I am too big for those now. My skill level is novice due to the fact I have not played in four years.

Usually the ones some sport shop wants to get sold. Seriously, you get the clubs which feel best to your touch and your swing. This is hard to explain. A good feel is having the club head right at the very bottom of the shaft. When you take a practice swing or two, it feels solid. The shaft seems to conform with the head and the confidence in the club starts immediately. A couple of balls hit at the range confirm the confidence. That is how every set I purchased was tested, by feel.

I have a project to prepare on the computerisation of the administration and membership of a Golf Club and need to address the following issues:
- objective of the project
- different forms that could be used
- how to proceed for the computersation and what would be the different steps
- what advantages the process of computerisation will bring to the Club and its members
- what alternative solutions that may exist
- pilot testing
- any other relevant issue
-

I think you need to address the question by analysis the business requirements of the project. Talk to the clients or users who are supposed to use the project(software in this case i presume). Discuss the features the users ask for/ thhe project could provide, for example the members can access or modify their membership online may be. Do discuss how this could benifit the organization financially and/or bring in more members etc. Hope this gives a good start.

About golf clubs, top flight vs. wilson brand?

Posted by Jeff Blanket

Ok so my mom was Christmas shopping for my dad and she saw a set of Wilson Ultra Golf Clubs. They looked nice so she bought them. But now were questioning the quality of the Wilson clubs to the ones he has now, Top Flight. So my question is which brand is better? Oh and he's def. not a beginner. thx =]

I don't think the difference would be that much. Those two brands are more entry level brands in terms of golf clubs and quality wise there isn't going to be much difference between them. There should not be much difference in the club-head material and it really just depends on the shaft quality that is in each of the clubs.

You really won't notice a difference in the equipment unless you are moving up to better golf club brands such as Titleist, Taylor Made, Callaway, etc. because they use different shaft and clubhead materials. If your dad is a decent golfer and no longer a beginner, I would consider getting him a better quality set of clubs to play with. Dick's Sporting Goods has most of the good brands at really decent prices.
