The most important song that was to be on the Beach Boy’s ill-fated Smile album was “Surf’s Up”, which was intended to close out the infamous album. Before I say more about Surf’s Up though, here is a little background
information on what was happening at the time:
In 1966, The Beatles released their stunning album, Revolver. The same year The Beach Boys released the most ambitious pop single ever made at that time, and maybe of all time, “Good Vibrations”. I mention this because during this period The Beatles and The Beach Boys were locked in a friendly artistic competition that both groups seemed to feed on. For example, the year before, the Beatles released their terrific Rubber Soul album, and the Beach Boys came right back with Pet Sounds, an equally terrific album — Paul McCartney has often stated it is his favorite album of all time.
With Good Vibrations and the Pet Sounds album firmly in their minds, the Beatles returned to the studio in June 1966 to begin work on Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. However, Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys were already hard at work building a new album around Good Vibrations, called simply “Smile”. The race was on and long story short, Smile in its original form never saw the light of day, and Sgt Pepper became the most famous album ever released by anyone.
Without recounting what happened to the Smile album, a very murky and rather sad tale, there are still portions of the basic tracks that exist today in various forms. In 2003, Brian Wilson did a very nice reconstruction of the
album, but even at best, it only hints at what might have been. Anyone who has ever heard the original versions of “Our Prayer”, “Wonderful”, and “Surf’s Up”, not to mention the extended versions of Good Vibrations and “Heroes and Villains”, gets a sense of how great an album Smile was shaping up to be.
Now, back to Surf’s Up, written by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks. Park’s wonderfully odd cinematic lyrics combined with Wilson’s cathedral-like chords and melody make it one of the most interesting songs from that era. Even Leonard Bernstein admired it and featured it in his great music documentary from 1966. You can watch a snippet of Brian working on Surf’s Up on this link:

Well, after that build up I have ensured that my little folk version of Surf’s Up will disappoint everyone, haha :o) I mean it only as a tribute to Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, really. I tried to stay true to the basic structure of the song as much as possible, but you Brian Wilson enthusiasts will recognize that I do not jump the octave on the “columnated ruins domino” line (this would have stripped all my gears :o). I used my new Octave Mandolin for accompaniment with a sprinkling of a Mexican mandolina overdub here and there, and I added some background color to the “child is father of the man” ending by overdubbing the mandolina several times. A Mexican mandolina is just a boxy looking mandolin actually. It sounds nice though I think. -Ron

Guitarist Phil Keegan always put on a virtuoso performance every night with G.e. and the Magic Man which came off G.e’s first album would always segue into Too Rolling Stoned at every live show.
The Magic Man served as G.e’s first “Hit Song” and it was always played likely first or near the start of just about every set of material around the South Bay.
This track always demonstrated G.e’s power and the melodic hooky track showed the potential for more killer that would come later on many many more albums of G.e’s very unique tunes. Always played near the Deep Purple song ‘Wring that Neck ( Hard Road )’ in the set list.
Better live versions than this one here are recorded at Wilson Park in Torrance in May and September of 1990 but this here night is a killer rendition in it’s own rite.

I love will smith, Wow. What was expected to be a short movie that would circulate within a small circle of friends has turned into something much more very quickly. I’m thrilled that so many people have enjoyed this video but also somewhat mortified that I added this without my daughter’s knowledge or consent. Maybe someday she will find some humor in it. Comments: Have been disabled. I think they have run their course. To those who have sent positive comments, thank you very much. You’ve made us appreciate what we have even more than we already do. To those of you who’ve said you’ve changed your mind about having children, well, have at it.

A little more about the video: She wasn’t coached to say anything, nor was she forced to make the video. She rarely stops talking. Those of you with children understand this: sometimes it’s harder to turn the faucet off than to turn the faucet on. Believe it or not, she has the seem the movie only once, and I spread it out over 3 days so it wouldn’t be too much all at once for her. ¹ The government recognised Queen Elizabeth II as the official Head of State from 1965 to 1970. The highest official of Rhodesia held the title “Officer Administering the Government” as he acted in lieu of a Governor-General, a post never appointed by the Queen. After the government declared Rhodesia a republic in March 1970 the president replaced the Governor-General as the highest official.

Rhodesia was the name adopted when the formerly British colony of Southern Rhodesia declared itself independent (Unilateral Declaration of Independence) on 11th November 1965. The name was also used with the establishment of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia in 1979. After a brief return to colonial status as Southern Rhodesia from 1979 to 1980, the country became the independent nation of Zimbabwe in April 1980. The country is landlocked and located in southern Africa. Predominantly white Settler Governments governed the country until 1979, initially as a self governing colony then, after the Unilateral Declaration of Independence as a self-proclaimed sovereign Dominion and latterly a Republic. The colony was named after Cecil John Rhodes, whose British South Africa Company acquired the land in the nineteenth century. The colony gained international recognition of its independence in 1980 as the Republic of Zimbabwe. Before 1964 the name “Rhodesia” referred to the territory of modern Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The British government adopted a policy of No Independence Before Majority African Rule (NIBMAR), dictating that colonies with a substantial population of white settlers would not receive independence except under conditions of universal suffrage and majority rule. The European minority Rhodesian Front (RF) government, led by Ian Smith, opposed the policy. The British Empire ruled over the self-governing colony of Southern Rhodesia until negotiations between Smith’s government and the UK government broke down in 1965.
Smith’s government declared the country independent from British rule on 11 November 1965 in what became known as UDI (Unilateral Declaration of Independence). Smith sent a telegram notifying British Prime Minister Harold Wilson at precisely 1 p.m. local time (11 a.m. in London) on 11 November, at the precise moment that the UK started its traditional two minutes of silence to mark the end of World War I and honour its war dead. The not-so-hidden message to “kith and kin,” as Smith put it, recalled Southern Rhodesia’s istance and allegiance to the UK in its time of need in World War I and II. British High Commissioner John Baines Johnston, who disliked Smith, cleaned out the High Commission building of all official documents and left Rhodesia. Smith gave strict instructions to his government not to harm the High Commission building in any way, much to Johnston’s surprise.
The international community condemned UDI. The United Nations Security Council authorised the first use of sanctions, targeting Rhodesia at the behest of Britain, beginning in 1965 and lasting until the restoration of British rule in December 1979. The terms of these sanctions forbade most forms of trade or financial exchange with Rhodesia. However, not all members of the international community adhered to the sanctions. South Africa, Portugal, Israel, Iran and some Arab nations helped Rhodesia in various ways. In the case of the U.S., the 1971 Byrd Amendment allowed the importation of chrome, ferrochrome and nickel from Rhodesia.[1] Rhodesia evaded sanctions in the short term but few outsiders invested in Rhodesia after the sanctions.
